Police Misconduct Matters

The vast majority of the police officers in your State perform their jobs with respect for their communities and in compliance with the rule of law.

However, there are some police officers who will abuse their authority and will break the law if they can get away with their actions.

Police Brutality/Excessive Force

Police brutality occurs when a police officer goes beyond reasonable force and employs unreasonable or excessive force on someone they have placed in custody, which may lead to serious injuries or death.

Police Misconduct

Police misconduct occurs when a police officer fails to act consistently with their policies and procedures, behaves disgracefully or improperly whether on duty or off duty and discriminates against someone because of their race, gender, or sexual identity.

The Professional Standards Command

If your complaint is not of a serious nature, you can complain directly to the Professional Standards Command of Victoria Police which is responsible for setting and promoting high standards of practice and integrity within Victoria Police.

The Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission

If you have a more serious complaint, you can complain to the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission which is an independent body that has the authority to investigate complaints of excessive use of force, discrimination or prejudice motivated by race, gender, or sexual identity and serious misconduct and corruption.
